THE MOST CREATIVE MINDS IN THE WORLD MEET THE MOST CREATIVE HANDS.
The greatest creative minds in the world belong to children. But their drawings usually suck (no matter what mummy says). No one has ever taken the incredible and unique creations that can only be dreamt up by a child and had a brilliant artist bring them to life (under the guidance of that child). ‘Mind of a Child - Hand of an Artist’ did just that by holding a unique event at the V&A Museum of Childhood. The first stage of the event took place when a team of illustrators made their way to the V&A Museum of Childhood for the London Design Festival. On this day, the illustrators gathered briefs and ideas from the children who were present – working to the theme of ‘Draw Tomorrow’. The artists, including the pioneer of 'Pop Art' Sir Peter Blake, worked on the children’s ideas either in their own studios, or during the live event. On the actual day 12 artists created their pictures live under the guidance of the particular child that had come up with the original brief. Each was very different – ranging from the graffiti sensibilities of the Le Gun collective to the gorgeous innocence of Brian Grimwood's style. Each had 4 hours to finish and all did. Plus, they really did, as they were guided by the kids (ages ranging from 4 – 11).
The resulting posters were then displayed in both the Museum of Childhood and the V&A as well as forming a London-wide poster campaign with sites specifically picked to be near schools. Here are a few examples of the 40 posters we created.
Matt Taylor and Cal, aged six
"We will wear glow in the dark clothes and live in weird underground tunnel buildings. Cars will have propellers so they can fly and we will spend most of our time digging for diamonds to give to the owner of the world. You can't see him because he is invisible."
Ahoy There! and Nikakare, aged five
“I'll live in Jamaica, because there will be a beach. Dolphins will swim with me in the sea. Which will be blue. There will be sea turtles, purple jelly fish and purple seals. There will be 101 dalmatians because I love them, they will be purple spotted dogs.”
Sir Peter Blake and Evie, aged eight
"Here, the colour of the sky reflects our mood—yellow for happy, purple for angry. Trees will sing when we're happy—oh, and everyone will wear spacesuit onesies and bounce along paths made of jelly."
David Holmes and Summer, aged three
"Everyone will live on one big boat except animals who will have one boat each. We will keep fit by jumping up and down and people will eat chips and tomatoes, while animals will eat grass."
Telegramme and Kham, aged four
"We will live on another planet with chickens and yellow dinosaurs and two sharks that can walk. It will be sunny with snow."
Richard Wilkinson and Hamish, aged four
"Aliens have three eyes and ten fingers on each hand. They will also like to eat Cheerios."
Tobatron and Rohan, aged 4
"In the future, Rohan will deliver milk on a lorry with five wheels while wearing a magic cloak. There are no cows, except invisible ones, so the milk will appear like magic."
